Indoor Air Quality in Houston: Improving the Air Your Family Breathes

Houston consistently ranks among the top 10 most air-polluted cities in the United States. But here’s what most people don’t know: the EPA estimates indoor air quality is often 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air. In a city where we run our AC for 8+ months and keep windows closed, the air inside your home matters enormously for your family’s health.

Common Indoor Air Pollutants in Houston Homes

  • Mold spores: Houston’s humidity makes mold the #1 indoor air quality concern
  • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds): Emitted by paints, furniture, flooring adhesives, and cleaning products
  • Particulate matter: Dust, pet dander, pollen (Houston has extreme pollen seasons)
  • Carbon monoxide: From gas appliances, water heaters, and attached garages
  • Radon: A naturally occurring radioactive gas; test your home every 2 years
  • Formaldehyde: Found in composite wood products, carpets, and some insulation

Upgrade Your HVAC Air Filtration

Your HVAC system is the most effective air quality tool in your home. Upgrade from standard 1-inch fiberglass filters to MERV-8 to MERV-11 pleated filters — these capture mold spores, dust mites, and pollen that standard filters miss. Change them every 60–90 days. For enhanced filtration, consider a whole-home HEPA filtration system added to your existing HVAC or a UV air purification system that kills mold and bacteria in the air handler.

Control Humidity — The Root of Most Houston IAQ Problems

Keep indoor humidity between 30–50%. Above 60%, mold and dust mites flourish. Below 30%, skin and respiratory systems dry out. Houston homes in summer often struggle to keep humidity below 60% with AC alone. A whole-home dehumidifier ($1,500–$3,000 installed) is the most effective solution for Houston homes. In winter, low humidity can be an issue — a whole-home humidifier on the HVAC system maintains optimal levels automatically.

Improve Ventilation Strategically

Modern energy-efficient homes are tightly sealed — which improves energy efficiency but can worsen air quality. Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) bring fresh outdoor air into the home while capturing the energy from outgoing air, maintaining efficiency while dramatically improving ventilation. Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans during and after cooking and bathing. In Houston’s mild October–April weather, opening windows during early mornings takes advantage of natural ventilation when outdoor air quality is best.
